So, I get more questions on base designs than anything on the board. Here is a thread exposing it all. It will take me a while to get all the info and pics I want to so be patient.
First off, there are 3 basic types of base designs you can go for. Each are for seperate goals you wish to achieve with your layout.
The first is DEFENSE type base. The defense type base is one that will be best used as your clan war base, and best to go with if you are going after trophies. It is used to be the hardest for the enemy to get stars and trophies from you during a raid on you. To be setup properly, its main goal is to protect your town hall over everything else. Resources may be stolen, but your trophies and town hall will remain secure to the best of the bases ability. The defense base is also the type of base I will be showing pictures of because it is the most useful overall against attacks. It also can be used as a farming base if you just pull your town hall outside the walls, and then protect your resources inside.
The second is a FARMING type base. Farming – This type of base design focuses on getting a free 12 hour shield from opponents raiding your base by having the Town Hall outside the walls. They will give you a higher chance to trigger the shield so you only get attacked once or twice when sleeping. The idea is simple. You get a shield, so you can "farm" your resources while not being constantly raided. Again, a good tip is to have a strong defense base, and put your resources inside the walls to be protected and then have your TH outside the walls to get hit and give you the shield. A farming base will loose you trophies, but its usually not many, and I have found the trophies lost can easily be made up by doing raiding.
The last style base is a HYBRID type base. The Hybrid style base is somewhat a combo of both of the above style layouts. If time permits, I may post some examples of these up also later. In my opinion, its better to go with a defense or farming base just depending on your goals for loot or trophies rather than have a mix which isn't geared toward one or the other specificly.
General base layout advice from Boomer:
Wall Breakers have high splash damage, double walls are not as effective as they once where, since they could break both lines of Walls with one blast.
Leave some buildings outside as ‘buffers’. Most enemy troops will target those buildings while your defenses attack them.

Never put your storage units together. Enemies will be able to wipe our your resources with ease. Placed next to storage units Wizard Towers can work very well as they can easily eliminate large groups of Goblins within a few seconds.
Upgrade wall intersections (where walls meet perpendicular to each other) first.
Mortars do best in the center of your base. However, do not put Mortars directly next to each other, as two well-placed Lightning Spells will destroy them both.
At higher levels, Air Defenses do best in the center of your base.
Cover as many buildings as possible with a defense. This includes other defensive buildings.
Space out defenses so they are neither too close nor too spread out. Defenses that are too close together cannot adequately protect the entirety of your village. Defenses that are too spread out cannot adequately protect each other and will be easily overwhelmed.
Finally, if walls are available, make as many small compartments as possible. The more compartments there are to go through, the longer your defenses have to destroy the enemy. If there is just one wall between your resources or town hall and the outside, once that single wall is breeched, the enemy can start taking your town hall or resources. Its always best to give your defenses max amount of time to destroy the enemy, and max small compartments is the way to go.
It is also important to know, before you upgrade your TH, you need to try and max out your defenses. Advancing your TH prior to doing this and you will find yourself getting slaughtered by many opponents lower than you. Each time you advance to the next TH, it costs a little more per raid, and you can collect less when your are raiding. Be sure to max out your troops and spells as often as your laboratory will let you. This gives you the best offense while raiding and during clan wars.
